Happy New Year! For the 4th year now, it has become an annual thing to lead off with a short list of selected major conferences or symposiums around the world, under the macro theme of Aging and Longevity. As usual, I try to avoid featuring events that are overly commercial in nature. I look for ones that present a useful, constructive dialogue and in addition feature an international scope.
As in previous years, there will be pop-up events that don’t make this opening list, and I will mention those as and when they appear. Naturally, there will be some conferences or one off presentations of merit that readers of this blog will notice I’ve missed, and if that’s the case, let me know. One further reminder: if you have the inclination to participate, some of these conferences are still asking for abstract submissions and as a result, programs are not complete.
Here’s the call to confer!
First, jumping ahead to 2018, it is worth mentioning that the International Federation on Ageing: 14th Global Conference will be taking place next to my doorstep in Toronto from August 8 -10.
Back to the future in 2017!
March 20-24, 2017 – Chicago, USA
Day One leads off with a National Forum on Family Caregiving. The full 48-page program is jam packed with an extensive range of subject matter for professionals working in the field of aging. March 23 presents a daylong “Boomer Business Summit” titled The New Economy: Seizing the Longevity Opportunity
April 27-30, 2017 – Graz, Austria
A joint conference of the European & North American Network in Aging Studies. Plenary speakers only so far announced but the broad sweep of the aging narrative looks to be engaging.
June 8-9, 2017 – Oxford England
10th Biennial Conference. What a surprise to see the call for abstracts under the theme “Culture, Commitment & Care across the Life Course”, with reference to Margaret Meade’s 1970 book Culture and Commitment. There is an inter-generational component to this event too.
June 8-11, 2017 – Kobe Japan
Produced by the International Academic Forum (iafor) the theme is East Meets West: Innovation and Discovery. Read the covering introduction for a very thoughtful look at the focus on the changing cultural aspects of family and aging. Submissions still welcome.
July 23-27, 2017 – San Francisco, USA
The fourth day features a “Tech Day” titled Technology and Aging: Innovation for Independence and Inclusion and includes a start-up pitch event for entrepreneurs.
Global Ageing Conference 2017 – Global Ageing Network
